N-Gage 2 Comparison Checklist

Jim and I are going to a mystery Nokia Press Event on Wednesday 14th. No idea what it is (sic) but when you’re asked to reply to ngage@xxxxxxxx.xxx it’s a bit of a giveaway that it’s the soon to be launched N-Gage 2.

Jim’s wishlist for the N-Gage 2 is here, so in the best interests of stealing a good meme, here’s mine.

  • The death of Side Talking. It’s not that bad, but then I’m the only person in the universe to actually enjoy the first N-Gage - Pretty much confirmed.
  • Hot Swapping MMC Slot. Heck the 9210 could manage it - Again, as good as confirmed.
  • Don’t switch to Symbian OS 7.0. They’ll probably change from 6.1, which is a shame. The MIDP 2.0 is for gaming, but does have it’s problems with no changes since the 6600 launched as the first 7.0s machine, but then Nokia could just let the Java masochists sort it out - Odds On To Happen.
  • OPL on the CD. Well if Jim can dream about Python… - Not a hope, I’ve not got enough thumbscrews in Finland. Yet.
  • A reasonable launch price. Everyone knows that the Networks subsidise it, but advertising it’s offline price of around £300 is a bad idea PR wise - They’ll show the offline price and cock this bit up
  • Don’t touch the radio! - Bet they do.
  • 3.5 mm stereo headphone socket - loose that dongle
  • Bring back the infra red port so I can use it as a modem for my Psion - Think it’s USB or IrDA, but not both. Boo.
  • Review copies at the event we can take away - Jim hopes so to, but not a chance…
  • Hot-link the All About N-Gage Mobile Site in the Services Browser - They should, it’s miles better than the Nokia effort.
  • I’m sure that (a) all will be revealed on Wenesday and (b) I’ll prefer the original unit unless I get a 4 month trial.

Personally I would like to see Symbian 8.0 installed. The 3D gaming additions (JSR-184 and OpenGL-ES) are perfect for the N-Gage.

Falken, nice thoughts, but Symbian OS 8.0 isn’t even released yet (although it is announced). Might be a nice option for N-Gage 3 in another 6 months time. I think Nokia’s big problem will be that the gaming industry is not used to a new machine from a manufactuere every 6 months. Yes it’s how the phone industry works, but Nokia need to realise that it’s fighting in two markets (Gaming and Phone) not a ‘new class’ where we should respect their rules.
