We’re up to five teams for the Zone 1 Challenge. Joining Geoff and Neil, is myself (now looking for running partners), Imajes and company from #joiito, Adham (via emil) and Jody. One thing that Jody was asking for was a complete list of the stations that have to be visited, so here it is…

Is there going to be enough room on Vauxhall platform for all of us?

I’m hoping we don’t all have the same idea for the start of the route otherwise it’s going to be a bit of a crowd surge through the passageways!

Although knocking tourists flying is a worthy pastime. Schoolkids count double.

Geoff told me yesterday that Jack Welsby MAY be coming along to give it a go. All we need is Robert Robinson to turn up and we’re set.

Well I’m very excited about all this, the fact that we have so many official ‘runners’ coming is a very cool thing.

My route’s worked out (and is a closely guarded secret), on paper it looks a good time, though I suspect the reality of The Tube will dent the estimated time.

    See you all soon

    Jody

We sat in the pub for a few hours discussing this last night. We wondered if any of us actually have the SAME route! That would be funny.

Also, even if we don’t, the likelyhood of seeing each other at points along the way I think it is quite high, as there are ‘certain’ change points which everyone has to do (e.g. Earl’s Court).

With so many of us now turning up Ewan, which pub are we going to afterwards? Needs to be able to accomodate us all!

To be honest, I’m happy with “The Dover Castle” which is midway between Oxford Circus and Regent’s Park (and no that’s NOT a clue to where my route finishes) and that should have a function room that will hold 40 comfortably.

As to following the same route, I’m not sure that will happen. There may be a long run to the first ‘division’ of routes, and francticlly trying to work out what that team are doing changing at St Paul’s and if they should follow them.

Maybe at a minimum we need to reveal our final stations at the pub?

Well, the accepted wisdom is to go north from Vauxhall. The first choice of change is Victoria and you can go either way on the circle/district from there. Geoff and myself have come to the conclusion that no two groups can have the exact same route. The chances are too small given all the possibilities. But there is a high chance that for the first few stations there may be several groups travelling together.

And since you speak of revealing routes, let’s start psyching each other out ;-)

Our route has 4 repetitions. That is, we pass through 4 stations twice. Everything else just once.

    Feeling confident?

    :-)

Well, I’ve got my route down to five station repeats, and although I’m not going to be allowed out to scope out the stations, I think it’s good enough to do my target of 3hr 30, and break the 3hr 15. Whether it measures up remains to be seen…

You have another team! (Well if you can call one person a team, and as long as my replacement turns up to work that day). I have the present unofficial record for travelling on every tube line (and the DLR) at least one stop in 65mins 29secs, so I hope provide at least a little bit of competition for the other teams :-).

You can check your times and how long your route should take on the http://www.tfl.gov.uk journey planner quite nicely - but that is seriously a very rough estimate seeing as the london underground days are 36 hours long - i.e. expecting to go 15 or so minutes behind schedule is probably a good idea.

Or you could do the sensible thing and go around the entire route to test it.

(That’s what we did on Saturday).

And what I’m doing tomorrow between job interviews. So if you see someone in a suit running between platforms - it might be me!

  12. Steve Paull on July 27th, 2004 17:20

Add my name to the list of starters. Only found out about this last week so am completely underprepared. Never mind, the underdog won Euro 2004!
Is the meeting point outside the station or booking hall or one of the platforms?

  13. John Sanders on July 29th, 2004 13:01

    Hi,

Spoke to Geoff by email - bit late but the team just completed a sub 19:40:00 run for the big one and found out about Geoffs record - will try to be there on the run tomorrow and will definately be in the pub! What time are people staying to as other team members are tied at work but would love to come along

    Cheers, John
