Just what I need, on top of a complete lack of sleep (kids keeping me up all night with sickness, vomiting, and ‘one more story’), my body clock somewhere over the Azores on it’s “one time-zone a day,” and a bundle of stories and write-ups to do for All About Palm and All About Symbian… Windows XP throws a wobbly.
Quite a spectacular wobbly as well - it only gave me the choice of “safe mode” on boot, but whenever that was chosen, the PC decided to reboot. Argh! Thus ensues a hunt for the Windows XP installation disc, and the Quick Start guide for the licence number. Bang goes an entire mornings work as my office is turned upside down, and then I have to work through the re-installation of XP.
It’s still causing a few hiccups, as the Program Registry has forgotten what’s installed - so I keep having to stop and grab arcane binaries from Microsoft (DirectX for example) but at least the data on the Hard Disc is okay - although all the important info had been copied to the Tablet PC for the PalmSource DevCon trip.
Speaking of Palm, the Treo has suffered as well. When I got to cruising altitude last week on the 777 flight to Los Angeles, while reading Paradise Lost (the other Harry Potter fan fiction you really need to check out, alongside Paradigm of Uncertainty) a lovely little orange LCD fault started spreading out on the screen - while it’s nice to have a fault in corporate colours, it is a bit annoying having to wait ten days to get my next-day exchange service (as Orange only does the switch in the UK), so that turned up today as well. Hot-Sync old device to PC, get new device, Hot-Sync new device (and tell it to use my existing profile) and all my data, programs, registration codes and settings are transferred over. If only Symbian was as user-friendly…
