Podcasting Being Mugged By The Alley
So how do you measure the success of your Podcasts? Or (to spin it around) how do you find the Podcasts to fill up your Minidisc or MP3 Player? Well you could use Google and see what you come up with as the top link. You could just head over to somewhere that runs quality control on a number of Podcasts (ah this will be the link to The Podcast Network and its Podcasts). Or you could try one of the million Cast Catalogues.
Those that can, do. Those that can’t, index them all… Seesh.
Anyay, by virtue of being there very early, and managing to get every single Podcast in the early days to give them a vocal check, Podcast Alley is the hip place to be, and the coveted “Top 10″ on the front page seems to have a lot of people fighting over it and pushing more isteners to get them there. Okay, let’s make one thing clear, I’m not talking about any one particular Podcast here, but I listen to a fair number of them every week and I hear it time and time again. “Please vote for me on Podcst Alley. It only takes a minute and really supports the show.” Gah it sickens me! If ever there was proof that links inside Podcasts actually work, it’s the over-inflated respect that people are holding Podcast Alley in.
So am I bitter I’m not there? Nope. Because while the Alley can get traffic to existing casts, it’s a hard market to break into, and I’d rather not push the idea that people need to vote for me on another site just to justify TPN Rock and the other Podcasts I help out with. If any other site came along and asked for this amount of exposure, then people would be wondering how much they were paid. Personally I’d rather people left comments about my shows (like this, this and this) so I can make a better Podcast.
The way to succeed is word of mouth, people linking to you from all over the world, google graft and having an excellent product. Not validation from a single site that is still wide open to rigging the vote.

Great comments Ewan and my thoughts exactly. I’m glad Mark of Tartan is in there…but I am so so so so so so so so so so so tired of “vote for me…” I did it for a few shows and got some votes – then realised I hated most of what was in the top 10 so took the ‘vote me’ thing off and stopped banging on about it.
I’m 500 and something – i haven’t bothered checking.
I always go to podcast.net – the original and best directory. For my UK stiff, I just go to Britcaster.
I get so bored of all the differing directories and couldn’t tell you what any of them do.
