Welcome to the Blog’s New Home (Fun and Games with WordPress)

So here we are, at the new shiny url www.ewanspence.com with an update to the blogging software. A whole bundle of little reasons have finally put enough pressure on me to actually get this change done.

First of all, the URL. Yes I know that name URL’s are quite popualr (Russell Beattie and Cameron Reilly to name two) but I’ve been quite happy posting my stuff under the Symbian Diaries subdomain for some time. Of course when that started (and intertia is a wonderful thing) the blog was just a dumping zone of thoughts. Now that I’m working on my own, both for sites like All About Symbian and other freelancing stuff, it’s important to get my profile up, keep it visible, and promote myself a bit more. I’ve plans for the whole ewanspence.com domain to take care of that – the new blog is the first step.

For a long time this was going to be Movable Type 3 (MT3) because I was pretty happy with MT2.66 over at Symbian Diaries. Unfortunatly I couldnst make head nor tail of the installation instructions. Rafe fought it for a good 24 hours or so, and eventually admitted defeat. I played again, go t no furhter and thought, hmm, I’m happy in WordPress (it powers The Podcast Network), so I wonder how long it would take to try an install that?

Short answer, five minutes. Five minutes after that I had imported all my old MT blog posts. Another 5 minutes and I had a new theme/UI from over 50 GPL’ed ones. A quick change of colours from red to blue, re-jig the top picture, and “The All New Ewan’s Musings” is here. There’s a lesson in there for SixApart – I was all ready to purchase a single user licence for MT once I had dry run tested MT3…. looks like a donation to WordPress is on the horizon.

More changes on the horizon as I remember more of the little reasons I wanted to change – can you all say comment and trackback spam – but there’s already a few in palce. Technorati Tagging for one (see the bottom of each post) and hopefully a slightly faster posting rate with more depth than before. I think the theme is going to stay, but I might widen out the column a bit more and tweak it slightly. As of now the top level domain name will be redirected to the blog, but as I’ll be adding a few more ‘blogs’ into the system (I’m already thinking of one that will simply link to every online article I write as a sort of living CV) that will eventually become a mix of a disambiguation page, feed reader for all the blogs under the site, and (of course) a ruddy great big Lego Avatar.
