Pledge Banks - UK ID Card and UK Digital Rights

In case you’ve not seen PledgeBank yet, it’s a site where people say they will do something, but only if a certain number of other people will join them in doing it. It’s had some great successes, probably the most notable one so far is reaching a £10,000 legal defence fund for those who refuse the UK National ID Card. So the following caught my eye, and is much more appropriate to my circumstances:
“I will actively support those people who, on behalf of all of us, refuse to register for an ID card, and I pledge to pay at least £20 into a fighting fund for them but only if 50,000 other people will too.”

The second pledge is one that came out of OpenTech 2005 this year. It’s nominally in the name of Danny O’Brien (because it needs one main name on it) but all the UK Bods involved in this sphere are behind it.
“I will create a standing order of 5 pounds per month to support an organisation that will campaign for digital rights in the UK but only if 1000 other people will too.”

Danny’s got a bit more background on his blog about where the £5,000 a month could go, but essentially an office, with two staff. One to handle PR and Media, and one to right news and be the ‘activist.’ People always asked if the internet could change things for the better. Well, it looks like the respective communities here are doing their best, and have my support.
