“Kevin [Marks], I Never Knew!” Says Adam Curry

Now that’s interesting. My previous post on The History of Podcasting, was always intended to drive the argument forward, beyond the Wikipedia editing. Remember, always try to contribute something to an argument. Looks like I did. Spotted this on the Adam Curry’s weblog, and excuse me if I post it in full…

Wow, I stand corrected. Thanks to this posting [My previous post - Ewan] I was able to find this video of Kevin Marks demoing an applescript downloading mp3 enclosures straight to his ipod. I stand corrected. I never saw this demonstration and it shows a lot more of the history of ‘audio on the web’ than I’ve been aware of.

I apologize to Kevin Marks for my history of removing this fact on WikiPedia. I really believed this was untrue and certainly wouldn’t have gone through all the trouble of learning applescript if I knew it already existed. In fact, in the video, Kevin even remarks about our conversation of the need for this functionality, which he built right there at BloggerCon! Kevin, what happened? Why didn’t we end up using your script? This remains a mystery to me.

Wow, this video is really incredible, some of the things being said are incredibly visionary, and I’m not even in the room ;)

Glad to be of service all round. Now, lets see if we can’t get a timeline on timeshifted automated audio delivery from everybody’s angle, as it’s clear from this that all those involved may have some blind spots in their knowledge.

And Kudos to Adam for actually making the apology in the post.

CC Chapman and I were discussing this topic, and we both agreed that there’s nothing Machiavelian (sorry for the spelling..) about AC. What you see is pretty much what you get. Sure, he’s a business man, but he’s mostly straight up. Like you say, kudos to him to admitting the oversight/error.

[…] Lots of people have commented on the story.  Cadenhead posted some more thoughts, Richard Giles writes that Curry is full of shit, as I read it, Audiobloogging 2.0 throws in the hat, over on Make You Go Hmm we get the Curry vs. Winer aspect of the story (head to Curry’s own site for more of the cat fight), Ewen Spence chimes in, as does The Blog Herald and Shelley Powers, who thinks an edit war is probably a good thing.  I happen to agree.  Mike Fylnn thinks it was inevitable and wonders why anyone gives a crap.  Dave Winer wonders where all the historians have gone and a whole host of others that I’m leaving out. Well, tsk. I think its disgraceful the way I have been edited out of the history of podcasting. Back before iPodder was released, I was
Pioneering distributing audio tracks with RSS
. Oh, wait. No I wasn’t, I was snarking about how bloody awful the RSS spec was. Also, why the hell would I want my name anyware near the sink of cromulence that is podcasting in general (no offense! ;)

The squabbles of tiny minds never cease to amuse me.
