One More Option for Kevin Mark’s TV Grid

The other missing piece follows on from my post about net video last week- what if the cable companies had a cache of shows for a while after airing, or let you retrieve them from each others’ PVRs? As the smarter ones have very high speed networks in their served neigbourhoods, this could be very responsive.

Kevin, you mean like Telewest’s “Replay” feature that takes selected TV shows (mainly from the BBC and Channel 4) and allows you to watch these (once) on demand up to seven days after they air on broadcast? It’s already here. And when the BBC get their finger out and supply IMP to the UK, we’re gonna come over there and stomp on all your toys.

The Telewest offering is called Teleport. More info here: http://www.telewest.co.uk/teleport/index.html

The BBC also has a multicast trial going on with certain UK ISPs, which must combine with the iMP at some point I suspect: http://www.bbc.co.uk/multicast/
