To Vidcast or Not To Vidcast

For a long time I’ve been able to look at myself and realise that, at heart, I’m an audio man. I’ve never really given video podcasting a serious thought, mainly because I’ve not been able to get a handle on something that would allow me to do a video podcast with at least some sort of hook. The one that’s been tickling my brain (but not getting into gear) is with The PSP Show, using game graphics, footage and and el cheapo green screeno (Chromakey) effect. But does it deliver anything more to the audience? I’m not sure.
My brain found its power move this afternoon though, and the germ of an idea that actually would only truly work in video started. I’m stull nurturing the idea, but knowing what I know in ‘casting, I am thinking along these lines.
- Whatever is done, the editing timescale needs to be super short and simple.
- The Show needs to be short - it’ needs to snack like Ze Frank, and not smorgasboard like some of the behemoth interview shows out there. This is entertainment, not education, so I’m thinking it needs to be a maximum of three minute show, three times a weeks.
- I’m not buying any heavy duty equipment - in fact I’d like to buy nothing at all to start with. So it needs to be powered through the video capture onthe digital cameras and mobile phones I have here. Ditto with software. Windows Movie Maker will do fine, thank you very much.
So with those in mind, I took to the outside world to grab some test footage, threw together what I’m calling “Draft Pilot #1,” and bounced it round a couple of people online. Once they get back to me, and I try to mould the format and idea into something a little more concrete, I’ll let you know if you can expect a regular vid-cast from me.

‘Windows Movie Maker will do fine’
*shudder* - It’s never done anything fine except make me throw things at my monitor in disgust…
