Travelling to Austin

And I’m here. Left the house in Edinburgh just before 7am, opend the door on the room in Austin just before 10pm. Add in the delights of a six hour time difference, and time on the road was 21 hours. And most of t was pretty smooth, no panic, no rush.

Edinburgh Airport pretty much set the mood. Only one person in front of me at check-in, walk up to the ‘Security’ station and (I kid you not) walked to the table, unpacked the laptop, and walked straight through the arch, with negligible delay. The only delay in the UK was the BA flight, held up on the previous flight. So that left 30 minutes late. The HEathrow terminal 1 to terminal 3 transfer usually takes an hour. SO a big thanks to the BA crew who shifted me down rom the last row to the second row so I could get out the aircraft. Turns out I had about 20 minutes wait in Departures, but I think that was the only ‘hmmm’ beat.

The whole trip was jsut supremely comfortable. Not in a physical sense, mind you, this is Economy over the Atlantic and then a Mad Dog MD-80 cross-county, but in a mental sense. I know the Heathrow transfer route, I know how Chicago O’Hare is laid out and where the short security line is (and the excellent flame-grilled burger bar is). I’ve been through Austin airport before – the only unknown really was where my room was – and after 21 hours I was quite happy for a Taxi to do all the work.
