Of Laptops, Phillips Screwdrivers, Disk Caddies and Pale Ale

So, since Friday, the laptop’s power jack has been playing up. It’s needed more and more wiggling to make a connection. The laptop is a pretty integral part to the whole podcasting while on the road operation, which meant that I’ve already been thinking of what do if it fails. Well, today it failed. No charging at all, and the last of the battery power was used to get the interviews of Evan Williams (Twitter) and Shawn O’Keefe (The SXSW Web Awards) out to Chris Vallance over at BBC Radio 5 Live for tonights Pods n Blogs show.

Okay so what to do with a dead laptop. Well, take it to Limore Fried and Phil Torrance to see if anything could be done. Well assuming that the board was okay, some solder and squeezing might work. But not till tomorrow (it’s party night here at SXSW). So I swung by one of the local computer stores to check it out. Most likely a shorted power ‘thing’ on the circuit board, so it could be repaired, but I’ve neither the time to even take a 48 hour rain check. There’s a handful of recon laptops in the store, and (I kid you not) there’s another Presario laptop of the same spec available.

So I’m sitting with a new laptop, a USB caddy to the old hard drive, and just making sure all the data is transferred over before the First Annual Great British Booze Up at SXSW gets under way.

It’s been a roller coaster day - I hope it’s flatter tomorrow.
