Grindhouse Double Bill Delayed in The UK; May Be Split Up

No, no, no, no, no!!! It’s been rumoured for a while, but the Distributors of Grindhouse have put back the release date, and are threatening to show the Grindhouse Double Bill as two seperate films (via Tom Coates). That’s jsut going to ruin the experience for anyone with any appreciation of films, all because it was incorrectly marketed in the US and didn’t make a massive megabucks opening weekend. Hint: Don’t open a gore-fest explotation homage over Easter Weekend when everyone has to go to a cute n cuddly family film.

Some of my best movie memories are from midnight Double-Bills at Edinburgh’s Cameo Cinema. One that particularly sticks in my mind was a “Judge Dredd / Robocop” double bill, the highlight of the first film being the reel snapping just as Dredd removed his helmet. On starting the film again, the projector bulb blew. Look, even the equipment was trying to make the point! Anyway, we all had to move to the screen next door to continue watching Stallone metaphorically destroying Megacity One. And then the salve of Robocop washed over us.
Heck I’ve organised overnight movie lock-in in my past with five feature films for a fiver (as I recall the programms were “The Crow, Highlander, The Life of Brian, The Shining and Aliens” for the first, and “The Crow, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters, Starship Troopers for the second).
So I’ll make this clear. If the films are split up I’m pretty sure I’ll be staying away, and waiting for the DVD to come out (or for The Cameo to put it back together as a double Bill off their own back). The artists behind the film - and Rodriguiez & Tarantino are clearly artists - have created Grindhouse. To have the artistic effort split up because the PR people didn’t know what to do then, and are now going top split up the films are try to push them against Spiderman 3, Pirate of The Caribbean: At Worlds End (squee) and Transformers (energon-squee!) is wrong on so many levels.
In the words of Edgar Wright… Don’t.
