JMS to the BBC? Whatever Could Be Going On?

Reported by Joe Straczynski himself, he;s popping in to speak to both Channel 4 and the BBC on his way to some business in central Europe. Now you have to think that it’s something to do with the ‘Lost Tales of Babylon 5′ anthology series that’s going straight to DVD (and which I’m pretty excited about, even with a UK release date some 9 weeks after the US release date), but there may be more to this. At least I hope there is, because I’m about to put on my silly prediction hat.

Babylon 5 DVD The Lost Tales

After all, the BBC really only have one Science Fiction property at the moment. So (1) JMS to write an episode of Doctor Who? This does make some sense, given the production team of Russell T Davis and co have reached out to other authors (notably Stephen Fry and J.K. Rowling) to pen episodes. Throwing the ‘quirky’ episode in Season 4 to him would be a delight to the hardcore fans, and certainly go down well with Sci-Fi Channel’s management and listeners.

But does it go deeper than that? After all, RTD (hmm, another show runner known by his initials) can’t go on helming Doctor Who forever. Perhaps (2) JMS to take over Doctor Who for Season 5 / Series 31 could be being investigated. That’sa little bit more wild, given the money that the BBC can offer, butif the artisitc challenge is there, perhaps this would be attractive. Although would you exchange California for Cardiff?Tricky call.

Personally the squee in me is hoping that (3) The BBC will revive Blake’s 7 with JMS at the helm. After all, the BBC are probably looking for another proerty they can market on DVD like crazy, sell to the US, and load up the merchandise. A revitalised B7 would be perfect for all that. JMS cites B7 as a huge influence over the way he wrote Babylon 5 with the character interactions and developments. Given the BBC let RTD have his way and bring back Doctor Who, would this be enough to tempt the former Murder, She Wrote and Real Ghostbusters scriptwriter to the UK?

As an aside, Chris Dunphy points out the shock he had when he realised that the original CG Toaster models from Babylon 5 have gone to the great hex-dump in the sky, because the storage instructions from the compay forbade Warner Bros making any backups. Wrong, wrong, wrong on so many levels…

I do seem to recall an interview aeons ago where JMS said how much he loved Tom Baker Doctor Who, so it doesn’t seem too much of a stretch that he could be being courted to write an episode or two… Certainly something to keep an eye out for.
