Eurovision 2007, Congrats to Serbia, Sweden were Robbed (and Scooch Sucked)

And that’s the fun over for another year. The Eurovision Song Contest that is. 41 countries giving their best to present their land and their culture to the world in a powerful musical showcase bringing people across Europe together through song. Oh and the UK send over some tat and Sir Terry Wogan.

Eurovision 2007 Contenders The Ark, from Sweden
The Ark, representing Sweden. Mmmm…

Terry Wogan makes it for the UK watchers. Unlike the rest of Europe, we don’t treat it with any seriousness, and it shows in Wogan’s commentary. A light and gentle wit floats over the earnest presentation… I point you towards a well placed “look, a little goth!” from last night. Every other EU county is shocked when they hear him – although I understand Australlia takes his commentary feed as well. It will be a sad day when he can no longer do this. Jody and I were wondering who would work, and the best we could do was Jonathan Ross.

The less said about the UK song the better. Scooch’s “Flying the Flag” was a mess of name checks to European cities and airline saftey briefing messages mixed over a subpar Stock Aitken and Waterman beat. Which wasn’t enough for Sonia in 1998, so who thought it would now? Ah the UK public in a phone vote. What a surprise we chose the silly one, and not a potential winner.

And air stewards? Forbes Mason and Alan Cumming must be looking for royalties after The High Life sitcom sent up Eurovision in this exact same way… In 1992I can’t believe Scooch got away with “would you like something to suck on while landing?” Is it any surprise only Malta gave us any decent points? Thats only fair given we supported them in the Second World War. It’s the only voting block we can rely on. Everyone else won;t touch the UK with a bargepole.

Perhaps next year we should just enter the Millwall FC Terraces and spend three minutes singing “No One like’s us, No one like’s us, No one like’s us, We Don’t Care.

As to the winning song, I’m quite pleased. That’s four years on the trot now that I’ve picked the winner. Admittedly I went for Latvia in second and Sweden third. They failed to place, which is a shame, because out of all the tracks it’s Sweden’s entry (The Worrying Kind, by The Ark) that’s been buzzing round my head since Saturday. They were robbed!
