Doctor Who Fandom, The Real World, and Casting Announcements

So I woke up this morning, checked BBC News, and for a brief moment thought that the editors had date stameped last year’s press release incorrectly. Top clicked story… [Catherine] Tate to be Docor’s New Companion. Turns out she’s back for Season 30, to start next year, continuing the character of ‘The Runaway Bride.’ Cue me doing a very Tenant-esque “No. No! No!! Squeee!!!”

The Doctor and Donna Noble

Not surprisingly, for one of the biggest mainstream TV success stories in the last few years, the casual watchers and the general public are sounding spectacularly happy over this. Not surprisingly, the hardcore fans on the forums have gone livid - but let’s be honest, I don’t think anything could actually make them happy.

This of course comes on top of the announcement that the Christmas Special will have Kylie Minougue in a starring role. This is bi event TV, this is the sort of moves that a flagship orgram should be making. If it all works out I might even forgive the production team for putting out the decidedly average season closer after a fantastic run of episodes.

General opinion around here was of the livid variety… We thought that if you were going to bring back a guest star as a companion Sally Sparrow from Blink would be a much better option…

It’s an obvious choice, but I don;t like it, for this reason. She;d be ‘another’ companion in RTD Who that would look up to the Doctor. WIth Donna, we;ve got more chance of an equal, of a restraining influence, and more conflict. Conflict drives drama.
