20 Questions on Doctor Who (Behind the Sofa)

It’s Behind the Sofa’s annual Doctor Who season survey. Right, here we go…

1. Nice and easy to start - what was your favourite episode and why?
Probably Human Nature, because it was a real story, with jeporady, danger, and it’s just lovely. And has consequences.

2. There, nice gentle one that. Feeling splenal yet? Okay then, which episode had you burning up the servers at OG like a vengeful Time Lord who’s got his fob watch back (er, meaning which episode was your least favourite?)
Easy. The mess that was Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks. From a single engine of destruction (Dalek)to ‘humorous’ looking over their shoulders like a bad Carry On Film in three seasons is not good.

3. Avoid all the spoilers this year? If so, what moment gave you your biggest squeal of surprise?
Avoided the lot of them - and while I had half an inkling it was coming, the big Derek Jacobi “I am.. The Master” was the moment.

4. And which bit let you down more than finding out Catherine Tate was the new companion?
Given I like the idea of Tate coming back, this doesn’t follow. But the Final two parter mostly let me down (Simm saved it from being Timelash-worthy. Just).

5. There’s been some pretty ripe science amidst the sci-fi this year - but name the one bit of pseudo-technobollocks that deserves the RTD award for bullshit logic.
“If you all just believe in the Doctor, he’ll become a fairy and save Peter Pan.” Russell T Davies just makes it up as he goes along.

6. Two years in and la Tennant is the longest running Doctor since 1989. Love him or loathe him, which was your most huggable David moment this season?
“Nice chips.”

7. And just in case you think I’m getting too soft, which Tenth Doctor bit of mockney, over-enunciating shtick had you most wanting to punch his lights out?
From ready to kill every Dalek in the Universe to trying to save Kahn one last time. Pah.

8. Our Russell, who art in Cardiff…Davies be thy name. But has this last year left you feeling that RTD is still the show’s saviour…or just a false prophet?
He’s great at organisation, great at setting up stories, but his personal implementation and over-stretching is lacking. Giving Helen Raynor a shopping list for the Dalek two parter, instead of just saying give us something with Daleks sums up the tinkerer in him.

9. And should - as rumour persists - next year see him jump ship, who should be approached to take over the reins?
Stephen Moffat. Paul Cornell. Joe Michael Straczynski. J.R. Hartley.

10. Speaking of next year, if / when Tennant quits, who would you like to see replace him (answers including the words MICHAEL and SHEEN will be deleted on grounds of improbability)?
I think a season or two of Paul McGann might work nicely. Or even some Sylvester McCoy. But failing that, someone British. Next.

11. And while we’re still in 2008, who do you reckon ol’ Rusty’s got in mind for next year’s ‘Big Bad’?
Something really weak.

12. Safe to say the Daleks will probably be in there somewhere - but would you rather they gave Season 4 a miss?
If the Daleks are hard as nails proper Daleks, I could cope. If they’re the god-awful Legion of Cult of Skaro emo-daleks, then no way.

13. And after the Daleks, the Cybermen and the Master, what will next year’s ‘kiss to the past’ be?
On current populist form, prolly Davros. Booo…

14. Back to this year - and what Season 3 moment made you most proud to be a fan?
The last ten minutes of Utopia, from just before the big reveal to the best goddamn cliffhanger in the three years of the Welsh revival.

15. …and which moment had you pouring lighter fuel over your Terrance Dicks collection..?
Pretty much most of the last episode.

16. Good or bad, this blog’s been there for you to vent your spleens on, week in, week out. So which post did you most enjoy reading and which contributor deserves the title ‘Behind the Sofa Blogger of the Year’?
Whoever was sixth.

17. And let’s hear it for the sterling work of our new Behind the Sofa uber-meister. So amongst all the tarting up our Damon’s done, which of the weekly skins for the site most tickled your fancy?
Utopia’s Derek Jacobi.

18. Following Bad Wolf and Torchwood, this year gave us ‘Vote Saxon’ as the not-so subtle meme threaded throughout most episodes. But did it do it for you?
Not much to be honest. Nice to know something is going on, but that’s about it. RTD needs some US TV lessons to make proper ongoing themes.

19. And whether it be a Cornell masterpiece or an RTD farrago, this season’s been resplendent with some fabulous dialogue. Which bit have you most found yourself quoting in polite company?
Dum-dum-dum-dum… Dum-dum-dum-dum… no matter where it is tapped out or what on

20. Finally, sum up Season 3 in just five words (expletives notwithstanding).
RTD shouldn’t write individual episodes.
