SXSW 2008 Panel Picker, One on One vs Panel Led Discussions

Looking ahead, the SXSW schedule for 2008 is now up for discussion, with the Panel Picker allowing people planning to attend (which includes me) to vote on the hundreds of panels submitted to the organisers. You can work through them, you can search, or stand by for people to point out their favourites (for example here’s Rachel Clarke’s Stories, Games and Your Brand Panel).
While I think this is a great idea (and about 2/3rds of the sessions will be chosen by this), I do hope that SXSW can find a way to run a ‘how to chair a panel’ because they can be very preachy to the audiences, and very hard to impart new information out to the audience - I’ve found interviewing the panelists afterwards to much more illuminating than the actual discussions. A case in point from SXSW 2007 would be Ian Schafer, CEO of Internet Marketing Agency Deep Focus. As part of a panel on Building an Online Fan Base, the content from everyone was rather dry and predictable. Move into a one on one session (listen here) and it becomes infinitly more interesting.
