Measuring Success… Keynoting the EBU’s “Multimedia Meets Radio” Conference

Just to make my life more interesting, in the week before I nip over to deal with a few things in America (ahem…) I’ll be in Barcelona. I’ve been invited by the European Broadcasting Union to sit on the keynote panel of their Multimedia Meets Radio conference.

The ninety minute panel is based around the question that the conference is wrapped around, namely “Measuring Success.” My initial take on this is fairly broad. In the media 1.0 world, there are agreed metrics and how you measure them, even though the sampling can lead to some weird results (eg the RAJAR diary for measuring radio audiences in the UK). But the point is that everyone agrees on them, their effect, and their implications on the audience.

What do we have in the Web 2.0 world that is comparable? And when companies and organisations don’t want to measure figures like pageviews, but ideas such as trust and engagement? I’d be interested in all your comments and thoughts.

Keynote Session: Measuring Success
The opening session looks at how broadcasters measure success in the age of Web 2.0 and the Long Tail. Speakers will debate the importance of traditional audience metrics and the need to measure qualities such as relevance and trust.
Chair:
Michael Mullane (Head of Radio News, Sport & New Media, EBU)
Speakers:
Robert Freeman (Head of Video, Guardian)
Alain Massé (Executive Director, SRF) – TBC
Wilfried Runde (Project Manager, DW)
Ewan Spence (Vice President, The Podcast Network; Freelance Journalist)
