The 3G iPhone is not $199

Let’s get the maths straight here…

3G iphone, 8gb… $199
Plus…
Data plan: $30/month (up from $10 a month)
Voice plan: $39/month
…and that’s every month…
($30 + $39) x 24 = $1656

Total iPhone 3G price: $1855

Well, to be fair, no mobile ends up just being the cost of the mobile. Service isn’t free.

But I agree with the sentiment - the semi-sneaky $240 negates the “discount” they’re offering. If you’re already an owner, I can’t see why anyone would want to upgrade, superficial reasons aside.

hmm - in the UK market it is looking very good value - can’t comment on the US.

To be fair, you always have the monthly fee, so that shouldn’t be factored into the cost.

But $69 a month… okay $80+ a month after fees and taxes, is a steep price for service (in my opinion).

Ewan, that’s a bit of a cheap shot. The Nokia E90 isn’t exactly cheap, either.
You know better than that - of course owning an iPhone is still something special and expensive, but Kudos to Apple for slashing the price for consumers this time around.

Frank, yes it is a cheap shot, but it’s also a cheap shot (IMO) to say the iPhone is now half price, the total cost of Ownership is no higher, albeit by the pricey sum of $40 over two years in the US.
