Eurovision in the UK – A Recent Potted History
Over on The Daily Dust I’ve put together a short (and rather subjective) history of the songs and performers that have put themselves forward to represent the United Kingdom at The Eurovision Song Contest.
This is, in part, to catch the mood of the nation as we settle down for tomorrow night’s first show in the BBC’s hunt for a singer for 2008. “Your Country Needs You” has a tough challenge – not just to find a singer who can handle the stress of Eurovision, but also to find a singer that the UK can get behind and believe (in a non campy way) but also that will be able to work the PR machine in every country and get as many of them voting as possible.
Let’s see who’s got through the audition process, and how many were from YouTube videos, how many were ‘invited by the BBC’ to audition and how many are signed to major record labels.
I’d love it if after five 17-20 year old singers introduce themselves with ditsy ballads that Def Leppard explode on the stage and belt out some proper rock…
Head over to The Daily Dust for my picks of the past, all with their own video clips.
