Liveblog: UK Eurovision, Your Country Needs You (ep 4)

If you are looking for the liveblog for this week’s episode (Jan 31st) you can find it here…

Welcome to my thoughts, live, on the fourth episode of the UK’s quest to find a signer for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest. A big welcome to everyone from The Stage… feel free to leave your comments below, or find me on Twitter (@ewanspence)

1935: So we’ll have either Mark, Jade or The Twins will sing for the UK in Moscow. It will all be down to a public vote. We’ve been here before, with a perfect Eurovision act not sent by the public (Cyndi) sending the novelty instead (Scooch). It’s going to be a nervous week for UK Eurovision fans…

1934: Dima Bilan is on the show next week! SQUEEEE!

1934: Emperors of Soul eliminated.

1933: Andrew Lloyd Webber chooses… Jade.

1932: Jade joins the Emperors of Soul in the bottom two.

1931: Twins survive on public vote (wow). Emperors of Soul in the bottom two.

1930: Here we go on the results!

1929: Hold on, three months ago the Twins were on –Factor.

1923: This week’s thank you to the record labels is Alicia Dixon. I’m being cynical again.

1919: And all the auditioning singers are finished. Now it’s time for an established singer to appear on the show, proclaim they love Eurovision (but not enough to represent the UK).

1917: Now for the girls joint song, and it’s “I’ll Stand By You.” Jade’s keeping her distance from the twins on stage. Can’t think why.

1915: Hmmm… could we not just send Mark and the Emperors of Soul. It has a certain ring to it.

1914: Joint songs, final chance to shine, Mark and the Emperors of Soul doing Don;t Let The Sun Go Down.

1911: The recap is done. I have to say The Twins still leave me in a quandry. when they work, they do very well (second song), but their first song, and in the weekly clips, they just appear flakey under pressure.

1908: Phone lines opened.

1907: They held that together. Andrew Lloyd Webber is preparing the Emperors of Soul for the “you’re not quite Eurovision” and the Twins getting a lot of praise. Is he preparing his comments for the bottom two in the public vote.

1907: Nope – stuck on the stools.

1906: The Twins close the audition songs with The Everley Brothers (All I Have To Do Is) Dream. And they’re on stools, the final refuge of balladeers. Will they do a BoyZone stand up?

1904: There’s no way we can see them on stage if you fill it with five female dancers (four more than ESC rules would allow)

1903: Uptown Girl from the Emperors of Soul. Almost acapella from them, and with a single female dancer on stage we’ve got a story to watch as well as the singing

1901: Hmmm. Obviously these songs are all covers, but Jade hasn’t put much of herself on show for this one – it’s the most Karaoke style performance she’s done in all the weeks on the BBC.

1859: Yikes! Jade is going to sing Aretha Franklin’s Think. She should be over her nerves now.

1858: Mike says we should give Mark some Johnny Logan style song for Eurovision and we’d be alright. I agree with that, he hit the notes and scored with that song.

1857: Round Two (two songs each this week). Mark doing a Rod Stewart song (I Don’t Want To Talk About It). This should suit his voice much better.

1856: Andrew Lloyd Webber putting a dig in about the tears and “once you get into harmony?”

1855: I’m not sure on that one. The choreography either needs to a perfect mirror of each other, or totally different. At the moment they’re in the middle.

1854: Did they just do a Jemini?

1852: The Twins are up next, and they’re the one act left where I worry that the pressure in Moscow will get to them. having clips of them crying in the ‘recap’ section and the “we don’t want to go home” is not showing a mental strength.

1849: That works well. That works very well. They’re growing into a polished act that could be very big even if they don’t get to Russia

1847: Emperors of Soul up next. They’re a good act, although they’re not a traditional Eurovision act. They could soar in Moscow, or fall flat. Other acts could be average, but Emperors is an all in bet if we send them. It would be a good gamble in my opinion.

1843: Ah, Jade gets it in the last thirty seconds of the song. If that energy was there for the whole song… nerves?

1842: Jade gets to show off her legs this week. That should help the voting. Cynical? Me?

1840: Jade up second Let’s see how far out her comfort zone singing All By Myself takes her.

1838: Reaction online in Eurovision circles was Mark did well. I though it was an average song, but the performance got top marks.

1836: Weak song for Mark, but he looks very much like Dima Bilan (it’s “Rock You” I think). He’s got the performance but he can’t showcase his voice or his singing with this one.

1835: Mark is up first, doing a power ballad.

1835: Andrew Lloyd Webber wants to launch a career and a song? No, we just want the song.

1834; Finally the twins are wearing something different to each other. I feel this week is the crunch week for them – we need to see steady nerves from them to prove they can survive the Russian Olympic Stadium crucible.

1833: At least Lulu can remember the words.

1832: Oh Lulu won did she? No she was joint first! But we’ll ignore that, shall we, because we want to sing Bucks Fizz next week and not Katrina and the Waves.

1830: Cue the Dad’s Army homage credits!

1825: Total Wipeout still needs (a) edited to 30 minutes and (b) two commentators. Anyway, Eurovision coming up in a few minutes. Just enough time for a nice cup of tea

The only thing I am unhappy about the Eurovision Song Contest is that the use of English, in the Eurovision Song Contest increases year by year.

As a native English speaker I think this is unfair!

It’s certainly time to break the habit of “language imperialism”, in the Eurovision Song Contest, and use a song, sung in Esperanto instead!

This is a serious suggestion, as you can see from the Esperanto music which is already available at http://www.vinilkosmo.com/?prs=listen or at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8837438938991452670

There’s even cheesy Esperanto music available! See http://www.ipernity.com/home/56084
