Every Town Needs An Alamo
Can I just say, right at the top, that someone at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin has got balls of steel.
When you advertise one film, and then switch it out for a second, unannounced film, then you’re risking trouble. When the first film is Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, and a brand new print of it, you’re going to get every single Star Trek die-hard out in force.
Switching out that experience (one that many in the audience had never seen on the big screen) for another film… that’s an all-in gamble. Especially when the film is the new Star Trek film, with all the worries and baggage that come with it – and you’re asking the fans to compare it directly to the greatest Trek film of all time.
So cue the start of Khan (“…in the 23rd Century….”), then the film “melts” (Alamo language for something waaay cool is about to happen); and Leonard Nimoy walks out and asks wouldn’t you rather see the new film instead… three hours before it’s going to be shown in Australia, thus giving the Drafthouse (yet again) claim World Premiere?
Ah the sweet sight of your card coming up on the river. Every town needs an Alamo Drafthouse. More on the night, including footage, at the Alamo Blog.
For the record, I’ve seen Wrath of Khan twice on the big screen, including the original theatrical release. And much as I would have loved to been there in the audience to see the new film, I would also be wondering when the Drafthouse would screen Khan…
