Eurovision is bigger than cancer… fact
During Blogworld Expo every introduction and talk started with “and please use the tag #beatcancer so we can get a World Record” or something similar. Which frankly sounds really positive, but is it any different than hiring a click squad in china to work an advertising campaign or YouTube promotion?
So the news that the tag #beatcancer was used 209,771 times, and set the world record for the most widespread social message in twenty four hours (a) does not come as a big surprise and (b) feels incredibly false to me. Of course it made a record, because you made up the record attempt!
But hold on, is #beatcancer really the biggest? Have any other tags been monitored to that extent? I don’t think so, but just to throw a potentially left-handed spanner into the works…
Eurovision.
While there weren’t any specific measurements for a Guiness Record Attempt back in May, Nick Burcher looked at the #eurovision tag during the three hours of the live final.
To get a sense of the volumes of Eurovision related tweets, I opened Twitter Search at the beginning of the Eurovision show and then left it open throughout (Twitter Search shows you how many tweets have been made since your search and this number keeps updating in real time.) There were an amazing amount of Eurovision tweets being made – though it would appear that ‘118,346 more results since you started searching’ is the limit as nothing updated after this:
So at least 118,000 posts in three hours, and I think that it’s fair to say that discussions before and after the show would at least double that number. Bang goes your cancer record… and those are genuine fans, not whipped bloggers.
Heck, go for a pro-rata approach and #eurovision has 946,768 mentions compared to #beatcancer’s 209,771.
Therefore Eurovision is four and a half times bigger than cancer!
I’ll take my cynical and manipulative hat off now, and pass it back to Drew…
