Don’t focus on HMV’s shops, focus on HMV’s portion of 7digitial #

The record labels are trying to put together a rescue package for HMV because “they don’t want the only choice to be Tesco or Amazon.” I think it’s far too late for the record companies to be trying to save a bricks and mortar store to sell the Top 20 albums – Tesco can manage that quite nicely and they’ll only put on sale the albums being heavily advertised in the media by the record companies.

Rather the record companies should be trying to capture one part of the HMV empire – their stake in online music store 7digital – and build up a true competitor to Amazon in the online space that feels as human and as welcoming as the indie music stores that you can still find on the streets next to your High Street
